MATTHIESSEN FAMILY READING

MAY 22, 2022

On what would have been Peter’s 95th birthday, guests gathered to hear a selection of readings from those who knew him best. Featuring personal writings from Peter’s widow, Maria, and children, Rue, Alex, and Luke (read by his son Andy), the program was a unique opportunity to learn more about one of the great writers of our time.

The event included a passage written by Maria for Peter at the Sun Valley Writers Conference, as well as personal pieces from memoirs written by Luke and Rue, and text written by Alex after a 2016 trip retracing his father’s footsteps in Nepal–the inspiration for The Snow Leopard.

We are most grateful to the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum, who hosted this gathering on their beautiful portico, as well as to PMC Committee Member Paul Rogers for underwriting the program, and PMC Vice President Scott Chaskey who introduced the esteemed guest speakers.
